1. Eliminate errors and filler words
If students find themselves bored, it won't be difficult for them to exit. If your course is difficult to understand, it disrupts students' learning experience and can negatively impact their feedback on the course. When editing the video, it's a good idea to focus on correcting errors and removing excessively long pauses and rambling sentences. We typically tend to use slurred words and hesitate when we're nervous or unprepared, which is more common online and quite distracting.
It is helpful if you eliminate these filler words as much as possible. Also, you should make sure that you are to the point, speaking clearly and interestingly. The better you prepare the course in advance, the fewer distractions you will have during recording and the shorter the editing process will be. Make sure to read the script out loud and practice it to familiarize yourself with the course material.
2. Add value-added notes
This is one of the simplest yet most useful changes to add to your course. Notes are often used to emphasize specific points or ideas, create lists, or visually introduce new words. Notes keep students focused because they allow important concepts to be visualized. To do this, add bullet points to your entry, but don't write everything you say. It's best to highlight specific topics or ideas, explain new words and concepts, and make lists to highlight the most important things about what you're teaching. The video format is interesting, but it can become monotonous. We suggest you alternate camera angles by cropping two frames. You can reduce the main video into short frames to enhance what you are saying, a technique known as b-roll. When you show a screen recording, you can crop it into images or slides, adding variety to your course and therefore attracting students' attention. When cutting or editing a video, there may be times when something is left abrupt in the recording. For example, removing stuttering can cause the video to skip, which can be distracting to students. In this case, it is recommended to enable transitions or editing additional material to hide these abrupt transitions.
5. Include music or sound effects
Music can change the atmosphere of your course. Use it to evoke emotions, make your course preview more engaging and professional, or to emphasize specific ideas. However, remember that music can also distract you. So make sure it doesn't distract students from the more important things you're teaching them. Choose your music wisely and carefully.
